Cleanup Goals Achieved at Formerly Used Defense Site
This case study reviews a former Naval Auxiliary Air Station located in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. After a thorough evaluation of viable remedies for petroleum contamination, the project team opted for an in-situ injection of PetroFix® Remediation Fluid to remediate the contaminants through a combination of sorption and bioremediation by adding electron acceptors. PetroFix Client Spotlight: Stephanie Black
Stephanie Black brings over 25 years of environmental experience in areas including Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, Brownfield assessments, and more. As Project Manager for American Environmental Corporation (AEC), a consulting, engineering and contracting firm and valued REGENESIS® client, Ms. Black continues to provide expertise in an array of environmental remediation services. She begins, “In addition to performing environmental site and Brownfield assessments, I’ve managed regulatory compliance audits, permit preparation, and asbestos and lead surveys. I am also AEC’s Ohio office health and safety coordinator, providing assistance and reviews for site-specific health and safety plans for projects.”
Emerging PetroFix Application Approach: Underground Storage Tank (UST) Basin Flood
PetroFix® can be flooded into active tank basins to help address dissolved contamination that may be resident from prior releases and that may be difficult to reach with normal injection approaches. PetroFix also can be pre-applied to gravels and basin or utility cavities during installation of fuel infrastructure following a previous leak and remediation project, or during scheduled replacement of pipelines and underground storage tanks. This pre-application prevents contamination of clean backfill and reduces the risk and spread of future pollution events. Preventative treatment costs will be low and provide savings by avoiding/reducing the scale of any remedial works needed. PetroFix is a liquid form of activated carbon and so can provide unequalled coverage and coating of bedding materials. It spreads easily, is non-toxic and safe to handle and apply.
Case Study: PetroFix Applied To Active UST Basin, Quickly Meeting Cleanup Goals
This case study reviews an active gasoline station in Colorado where stained soils were discovered during the replacement of the underground storage tank (UST) spill buckets. After considering multiple options, CGRS, a leading environmental consulting firm, developed and implemented an innovative, low-risk, and highly cost-effective treatment program utilizing PetroFix to address the groundwater contamination in situ.
Emerging PetroFix Application Approach: Emergency In-Situ Spill Response
While hydrocarbon spill response methods reduce the immediate impact of a spill, residual risks remain because remaining hydrocarbons can form groundwater plumes that may threaten downgradient receptors or cross property boundaries. Eventual remediation of these residual risks can be costly because the time between emergency response and formal remedial assessment takes time while contaminants continue to migrate. Unfortunately, movement of residual contamination over boundaries can result in extra complexity and cost. PetroFix Remediation Fluid can be used in combination with other spill response methods such as excavation as a downgradient properly line barriers preventing plume encroachment (as shown in the figure above) or a trench or excavation surface coatings that reduce the vertical migration and formation of dissolved contamination in situ after a spill. A case study highlighting the latter scenario is linked below.

PetroFix Client Spotlight: Megan Richard
As a Senior Project Manager with Antea Group, a global environment, health, safety and sustainability consulting firm, Megan Richard is tasked with an array of responsibilities that require constant collaboration, just one aspect of her work that she enjoys. She begins, “I work with a multi-disciplined team of professionals to identify cost-effective solutions to manage environmental risk. To do this, I am in charge of developing and implementing work plans, remedial investigations, and remedial action plans.” She continues, “What I like most about my job is working collaboratively with the team to solve complex problems. Individuals bring unique skillsets and important insights, and together, we can develop creative strategies.”
Featured Case Study: Multiple Site Closures Achieved Using PetroFix
This multi-site case study reviews eight underground storage tank (UST) sites where the leading global environmental consulting firm Antea® Group has closed the site or positioned it to be on-track for closure using PetroFix. Antea Group is amongst the first environmental consulting companies to recognize and adopt PetroFix as a tool to rapidly reduce PHC impacts and achieve remedial objectives in groundwater. Applying PetroFix with economic efficiency, the company successfully advanced a portfolio of legacy UST release sites through the closure process over a short timeframe. In this effort, Antea Group sought and obtained approvals through multiple state regulatory agencies, self-completed the designs to determine dosing and injection layouts, implemented PetroFix treatments using different in situ application methods, and conducted performance monitoring to demonstrate remedial objective attainment.
Featured Webinar: Recording Now Available
In this webinar we were pleased to have a special presentation by Jack Sheldon, Senior Remediation Specialist at Antea Group. His presentation discussed validating the role of PetroFix® technology for the remediation practitioner’s toolbox. He was joined by Todd Herrington, Global PetroFix Product Manager at REGENESIS.
This webinar will highlight the important role of the nitrate/sulfate electron acceptor package plays in the performance of the PetroFix technology. Four case studies will also be presented that look at application techniques, site chemistry changes, microbial profiles, and lessons learned.
Featured Video: A Practical Approach to Using PetroFix for Remediating Petroleum Plumes
In this video, Todd Herrington, Global PetroFix Product Manager for REGENESIS, presents his poster on “Performance of a Micron-Scale Carbon Remedial Fluid with Soluble Electron Acceptors for Remediating Petroleum Plumes.” PetroFix® is a water-based suspension of micron-scale (1-2μm) activated carbon biostimulating electron acceptors that is injected in situ under low pressure to sorb and then biodegrade high levels of petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater. Engineered to provide immediate and long-lasting results for a variety of sites such as retail gas stations and industrial spills, PetroFix is a cost-effective in situ treatment for petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. PetroFix is made from natural non-hazardous activated carbon and soluble electron acceptor salts. It is therefore simple and safe to use.
